Happy Are the Sad

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” Matthew 5:4

Was Jesus saying that you are happy if you are sad?  Actually, He was.  Does that make sense to most people? No.  Why? Because He was not talking about the mourning that you and I normally think of when we think about mourning.

To me, mourning would be what you do when you lose a loved one or you lose a relationship with someone you were close to or you find yourself in a situation that just seems to have no way out. But those issues, even though they make us sad, are not the issues Jesus had in mind.  In the previous verse, He talked about being blessed if you were poor in spirit.  That is, you realized that you were a sinner and there was nothing you could do on your own to restore your relationship with a Holy God.

Now, He builds on that statement.  Knowing you are spiritually poor, the next step is to “mourn” over what made you spiritually poor.  What makes us spiritually poor with God is our loss of relationship with Him due to sin. Knowing we have sinned (missed the mark) and cannot be in God’s presence or provision should make us sad.  For a person who loves God to recognize that loss would really cause us to mourn.  That mourning would then start us seeking comfort from somewhere.  Jesus tells us that if the reason we are mourning is because of this lost relationship, you will be comforted.  As He carried out His three year ministry on earth, He did just that- comforted those who mourned over their sins.

He comforts us today.  For those who accept His free gift of salvation, we have a wonderful promise that there will be a time when there is no more mourning.  Sin will no longer be present.  It is after the Lord creates a new heaven and a new earth and in Revelation 21:4 He promises “There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”  Until that time, you can still be comforted if you come to Him and “mourn” your sins.

The belief that does not save is the belief that does not change the person who believes. Jesus said that if you believe in Him, you would be changed
