God Loves To Save The Most Despicable Kinds Of People
   Home            Those who are meek

Matthew 5:5 “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.”

If you asked a million people “How many of you would like to have others characterize you as meek?” I doubt that you would get a very high percentage answer “yes”.  Our society honors and rewards the strong, the proud, the self-sufficient, the aggressive.  But meek, I don’t think so.

Meek suggests a person who is cowardly, shy.  Meek is someone who is run-over by everyone.  The meek are the weak! Or are they?  Jesus was meek.  From a biblical standpoint, meek suggests a mildness of disposition and a gentleness of spirit towards God! Does that change your thought about being meek?  It does not mean weak; it means humility toward God.  Submitting yourself to God and His will for your life does not make you weak- it makes you meek.

Being meek means relying on God’s power, not on our own.  It is a work of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer.  Of course if you don’t believe in God, being meek makes no sense.  Like most scripture truths, it is utter nonsense to those who have not come to Christ to receive Him as Savior and Lord of your life.  Without the Holy Spirit indwelling you, submitting yourself to God makes little sense.

The option of course is to live like most of the western world lives; self-assertive and self-interested. They may or may not allow God to play a part in their lives- it just depends on if He stays out of their way.  When your life is “all about you” and “all about what you can get”, meekness is not going to be a trait that you want to build up.  Many professing believers attend church on Sunday and pray that God will give them everything they want including heaven but then do their best to keep God out of their lives the rest of the week.  These are the hypocrites that people point to all the time as a condemnation of religion.

Being meek is a sure sign of a person who has placed their faith and trust in Jesus Christ as both Savior and Lord.  They will be “meek” and they will inherit the earth. Inheritance is a future claim to a present reality.  Jesus is coming soon and He will rule and reign on this earth and He will create a new earth that the meek will inherit.

The belief that does not save is the belief that does not change the person who believes. Jesus said that if you believe in Him, you would be changed
