Lord's Day versus the Sabbath Day
Colossians 2:16-17 "Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These things are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ."
Hebrews 10:25 "Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another- all the more as you see the Day approaching."
To get a full understanding of the Lord's Day versus the Sabbath Day, please go to a teaching by Dr. John MacArthur at his website:
In the article,
Dr.John MacArthur points out that the Sabbath Day is part of the Old Covenant Mosaic Law that was not carried over to the New Covenant. The Sabbath had been given to the Jewish people to help them see God as Judge and Lawmaker and to see themselves as violators of the law. It was a day not so much about worship, but of confession and repentance. There were so many restrictions and complicated ritualistic activities about that day that it was a tremendous burden on the people. You could not go anywhere or do anything other than stay around the house and deal with your fallen condition..
The Sabbath was ended when Christ initiated the New Covenant with His death on the cross. Our sins had been dealt with by the atonement Christ provided for us and the redemption He purchased for us. God, in His great plan for the New Covenant, had Christ rise from the grave on Sunday. The first worship service was by Mary Magdalene and Mary mother of James who fell at His feet and worshiped Him.
There are no rules governing what we are to do on the Lord's Day. The fasting, working, rules do not apply to the Lord's Day. we are to simply "meet together" on that day as a day of Worshiping the Lord as our Savior and thanking Him for what He has done.
