Hungry and Thirsty

Matthew 5:6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.”

Everyone who is physically alive hungers and thirsts for something.  We usually associate hunger with food and thirst with drink. Hunger and thirst are powerful human needs that have to be met or we will die.  When we reach that level of lack of those two things our bodies stop performing as intended.  We are 80% liquid; virtual walking, talking water balloons.  Without water, we shrivel, our organs shut down, our mind cannot focus, we lose strength, and shortly after that we will die.  Without food to provide fuel, we wither away and again the same result as lack of water occurs- death.

We were born with these needs for our physical bodies.  We were also born with spiritual needs.  We were born with a spiritual hunger and thirst which draws us to our Creator.  We want to be with Him and in communion with Him.  In order to be with God we need to be “right” with Him.  To be “right” with Him is to have “righteousness”.  We as sinners can never have a righteousness of our own and our God knows this.  He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to “atone” for our sins so that He could give us this righteousness.  For those who have asked Jesus to be Lord and Savior of their lives, Jesus gives us His righteousness.

As we live out our lives as a person who has the imputed righteousness of Christ given to us, we constantly hunger and thirst to live lives that are righteous.  Because we love Jesus, we want to live a life that demonstrates that He is Lord of our lives.  We want to always live righteously but because of our sin nature, we don’t always live up to that standard.  Christ sent the Holy Spirit to indwell those whom He has saved to strengthen us and to guide us.  When we do fail to live righteously, we are quick to confess our sins and ask for His forgiveness and to do our best to turn away from those sins.

Like food and drink is needed to satisfy our physical needs, we need Christ to satisfy our spiritual needs.  We hunger and thirst for righteousness and our Lord and Savior fills us every day of our lives.

The belief that does not save is the belief that does not change the person who believes. Jesus said that if you believe in Him, you would be changed
