God Loves To Save The Most Despicable Kinds Of People

A Peace of Work

Matthew 5:9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God”

The dictionary defines “peace” as “the normal, non-warring condition of a nation, group of nations, or the world.”  It defines a peacemaker as “a person, group, or nation that tries to make peace, esp. by reconciling parties who disagree, quarrel, or fight.”

When Christ was presenting the “Beatitudes” (blesseds), He was addressing His disciples primarily and the crowd that had gathered secondarily.  He was talking about those qualities of a person that make up righteousness.  The standards He set are impossible for us as fallen people to ever achieve 100%. He has already said in this sermon that they would be blessed if they were “poor in spirit”, “mourned for their sins”, were “meek”, “hungered and thirsted for righteousness”, were “merciful”, and were “pure in heart..”  Now he tells them they will be blessed if they were “peacemakers”.

As with the other qualities of a righteous person, he was not talking about these things as the world talks about them.  His meaning here is that He is talking about living in such a way that we promote peace between man and God primarily and between man and man secondarily. People like this are people who live in God’s wisdom and grace.  It is as James said in James 3:13-17 “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.  But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about or deny the truth.  Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil.  For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.  But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure, then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.”

Peace-breakers on the other hand are easy to spot.  They look for the problem in every solution.  They take either side as long as it will cause dissention. Like kids, they run when they are supposed to walk and walk when they are supposed to run.  There is rarely a comfortable, peaceful moment around them.  They tend to be unhappy, angry, jealous, envious, miserable people and they produce no good fruit. You see them and say “wow, what a piece of work”.  Be known as a “peacemaker”, not a “peacebreaker”.

The belief that does not save is the belief that does not change the person who believes. Jesus said that if you believe in Him, you would be changed
